National Volunteer Week, a program of Points of Light, was established in 1974 and has grown exponentially each year, with thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week.

Lunch & Learn - IPOST

April 19, 2017 We will be hosting a Lunch & Learn at the Washington Public Library in Washington, IA. Katrina Altenhofen, Executive Director at Hospice of Washington County will provide information on the Iowa's Physician Orders for Scope of Treatment (IPOST). Katrina will discuss the importance of an IPOST for providing continuity of care and seamless communications and execution of individual patient care choices. Having a living will or advanced directions are excellent steps for individuals but an IPOST helps to strengthen those documents to help promote community care coordination and advance care planning.

TBA - Relay for Life is a life-changing event that helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Hospice of Washington County has a team that participates in this event. Our team members are made up from our staff, their families, volunteers, hospice families, and community members. Short Peterseim Memorial Golf Tournament

Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Kalona Golf Course, 1376 Hwy 1, Kalona, IA. Join us for a day of fun on the Kalona Golf Course. Lunch and carts will be provided. Two shot gun starts 8:30am & 1:00pm. 18th Annual Hospice 5K Memorial Run/Walk Fundraiser

Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Sunset Park, near the Rocket Slide in Washington, Iowa.

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day - October 10, 2017

This is a unified day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care around the world. The aims of the day are - to share our vision to increase the availability of hospice and palliative care throughout the world by creating opportunities to speak out about the issues. raise awareness and understanding of the needs "medical, social, practical, spiritual" of people living with a life limiting illness and their families. To raise funds to support and develop hospice and palliative care services around the world.

Hospice Halloween Trivia Fundraiser

October 27, 2017 at the Iowa National Guard Armory from 6:30pm - 10:00pm. Dress in costume.  Registration begins at 6:30pm, games start at 7:00pm. Teams can have 4 - 10 players per team. Each player pays a registration fee of $10.00. You can purchase a table and fill it with your family and friends! Space is limited - so sign up soon! Walk-ins welcome the night of the event if space allows!

Teams can also purchase a set of mulligans, one for each round, and a maximum of 2 double down stickers! We will have a 50/50 drawing and a couple of surprises along the way that night. Prizes for the winning and losing team will be handed out at the end of the festivities. Best Individual costume and best team costumes will be awarded earlier in the evening.

Team photos and event photos will be posted to Facebook after the event. So make sure you like Hospice of Washington County on Facebook!

BYOB, adult beverages are okay, please be responsible and of course 21 years old!! Snacks will be available for a free will donation or bring your own.

November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month

Join us as we celebrate what "Hospice is ..." to our community members, staff and volunteers!

Veteran's Day

November 11th, observed in the United States in honor of veterans of the armed services and in commemoration of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. In 1954 it was renamed from Armistice Day and given the added significance of honoring veterans.

Community Memorial Service

Sunday, November 19, 2017 at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington, Iowa. Service begins at 2:00pm. This memorial service was created to honor all our community members that have passed away over the past year. Your loved one did not have to be a Hospice patient in order to participate in the event.the service will feature a video tribute dedicated to our community members that have passed away over the past year.

Please send two pictures of your loved one to be included in the video tribute. Include your loved ones full name, their date of birth and of death. All photos should be sent or brought to Hospice of Washington County, by Monday November 13th.

Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you would like the pictures returned by mail or you can pick them up at the Hospice of Washington County office.

Memorial Tree

On display throughout December until after the new year at the Washington Public Library, in Washington, Iowa. Families are encouraged to donate an ornament in their loved one's honor to be displayed on the tree each year.

Tickets available at the door or at Hospice of Washington Counties office. We have several different types of soups, fresh baked breads, and homemade desserts & pies. Our annual silent auction is not to be missed. We have several one of a kind items, hand crafted quilts and other hand crafted goodies. Several businesses in the community donate items for the auction and we have so many generous community members and hospice families that donate items to the auction as well. We start the bidding at 4:15p, the highest bid takes the merchandise.

Our annual quilt for the quilt raffle will be unveiled at this event! No spoiler here folks, come on out to see the beautiful quilt for 2018! Every year we say they can't get any prettier, but each year we are proven wrong!!

Compassionate Heart Luncheon

The Tree of Love is lighted during the luncheon. The Tree of Love will be displayed through February at the library. Loved ones can purchase a simple compassionate heart ornament for their loved ones for display on the tree and for all the years to follow for a donation of $5.00. This Week celebrates these dedicated healers and is an occasion for patients to recognize their doctor’s commitment to their care.  During that week, colleagues take time to recognize the achievements of their fellow physicians as well.
